Handmade Product Pricing Calculator

To price a handmade product, add up what one item costs you - materials, your time at an hourly wage, packaging, shipping supplies, equipment wear and a share of your monthly costs - then multiply: total cost x 2 = wholesale, and wholesale x 2 = retail. Below the price you see the profit left after Etsy fees and postage, and you can switch to a target profit or check the price you charge now.

The Handmade Product Pricing Calculator workbook on Etsy uses the same math as this page and adds:

  • A materials list: type the pack price, size and unit once, and the cost per unit is worked out for you.
  • Buy in one unit, use in another - wax by the lb into a recipe in oz or g, cord by the yard in inches.
  • Build each product from a recipe picked from dropdown lists, so the materials cost adds itself up.
  • Your Etsy fees line by line, and a status line that turns orange when a price loses money.
  • Every product on one Price List: cost, wholesale, retail, fees, postage, profit and profit per hour.

Questions

What is the formula for pricing handmade items?

Total cost x 2 = wholesale, wholesale x 2 = retail, where total cost is materials + your time x your wage + packaging, shipping supplies, equipment wear and a share of your monthly costs. Change both multipliers to your own, or pick "For a target profit" to set the share of the price you want to keep.

How much should I charge for a candle?

In the example, an 8 oz soy candle with $3.56 of materials and 10 minutes of work costs $8.64, so it sells for $17.50 wholesale and $35.00 retail - $22.01 profit after Etsy fees and postage.

How do I price items I make in batches?

Type the time and the materials for the whole batch and how many items it makes. They are shared over the items; packaging and postage stay per item.

Should I pay myself in the price?

Yes. Your time x your hourly wage is part of the total cost, so any profit is on top of your pay.

Which Etsy fees are counted?

The transaction fee of 6.5% of the item price and the shipping you charge, payment processing of 3% of what the buyer pays (sales tax included) plus $0.25, and the $0.20 listing fee - Etsy US rates as of October 2026. Open "Etsy fees and sales tax" to change any rate, or set them to 0 for a cash sale at a market.
